Why a Board-Certified Specialist Makes a Difference
Expertise that starts where standard physical therapy ends.
When recovery is complex, “good enough” care is not enough. Specialist-led neurological rehab can change how quickly you regain function, how safely you progress, and how clearly your plan adapts week to week.
The "1%" Statistic
At FAM Rehabilitation, clinical direction comes from a board-certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist. That matters when you are dealing with stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s, or other neurological challenges.
Most people don’t realize that Physical Therapy has specialties just like medicine. While all PTs are licensed, only a small fraction—less than 1% in the United States—achieve the title of Board-Certified Neurological Clinical Specialist (NCS).
What an NCS Actually Means
To earn board certification, a therapist must meet strict eligibility requirements and pass a comprehensive specialty exam. One core pathway requires documented specialty clinical practice hours in neurology and an exam through ABPTS.
This is not a marketing title. It is a specialization backed by formal standards set within American Physical Therapy Association specialization and ABPTS processes.
Why this matters for your Stroke, SCI, or Parkinson’s Disease recovery:
Evidence-Based Precision: Neurological recovery depends on neuroplasticity, your nervous system’s ability to adapt with the right practice. A specialist knows how to progress intensity, repetition, and task selection so therapy is not just movement, it is targeted change.
Complex Problem Solving: Neurological conditions often come with layered issues that affect safety and results. A specialist is trained to identify complications, adjust the plan, and keep progress moving without guessing.
Technology Used as a Bridge to Function: Equipment is not the point. Function is. When tools like the SoloStep or Vivistim are appropriate, a specialist makes sure the technology supports the exact outcomes you need

FAQs
Do I need to know whether I need neuro or orthopedic care before I call?
No. Call and tell us what is going on. We will guide you to the right evaluation.
Is board certification
the same as experience?
No. Board certification is a formal specialization with eligibility requirements and a specialty exam. However, you do need many hours of experience treating all neurological conditions in order to qualify to sit for the exam.
Do you treat stroke, spinal cord injury, and Parkinson’s Disease?
Yes. If you are not sure what category you fit into, call and we will help you sort it out.
Do I need a referral?
It depends on your insurance plan. Call and we will tell you what you need before your first visit.
How soon will I notice progress?
Many people notice early changes first in daily function, safety, and confidence. Timeline depends on the condition, complexity, and consistency of therapy.
