Regaining Freedom: Why a Specialized Seating Evaluation is the First Step.

A wheelchair shouldn't just be a piece of equipment; it is your world. Yet, so many people settle for discomfort, not realizing that a poorly fitted chair can cause skin irritation, breakdown, and a loss of independence.

The Problem with "Off-the-Shelf" Many patients leave the hospital with a standard "drive" wheelchair. These are generic, sling-back chairs designed for temporary transport, not long-term living. Living in a generic chair is like wearing clothes that are three sizes too small—it’s uncomfortable, restricts your movement, and limits what you can do.

We see people who have been sitting in these "off-the-shelf" chairs for years, assuming that their discomfort is just part of life. It doesn't have to be.

The Custom Difference If you have a neurological diagnosis, insurance will almost always cover a chair that is custom-fitted to your body and your life. Whether you need a specific cushion to prevent sores, a custom-molded back for MS support, or a specific "camber" (wheel angle) to help you fit through the doorways of your home, these adjustments change everything.

How the FAM Assessment Works We take a team approach. An assessment includes:

  • The Team: You, your FAM therapist, and a certified ATP (Assistive Technology Professional) from a vendor of your choice.

  • The Goal: We don't just measure you; we talk about your life. Do you need power or manual? Is your home accessible? We figure out the "why" behind the equipment.

  • The Paperwork: We handle the heavy lifting. We write the "Letter of Medical Necessity"—often a 10+ page document detailing your medical history, strength, and home setup to justify the equipment to your insurance.

The Process & Investment

  1. Doctor's Visit: You must have a "face-to-face" appointment with your doctor specifically regarding the wheelchair to get a script.

  2. The Evaluation: You come to FAM for the assessment (approx. 1 hour).

  3. Insurance Approval: W FAM coordinates with the wheelchair vendor to facilitate the approval process with your insurance carrier.

Don't Wait If you are uncomfortable, or if something on your current chair breaks, call your vendor immediately. Don't wait until the whole chair is wrecked. If you are ready for a chair that actually fits you, contact us to schedule an assessment.
